BIO: Managing Director Erich Steinbock

A 45-year veteran of the hospitality industry, Erich Steinbock joins Rosewood Hotels & Resorts as Managing Director of The Carlyle, A Rosewood Hotel where he is responsible for overseeing all areas of the legendary Upper East Side hotel including The Carlyle Restaurant, Bemelmans Bar, Café Carlyle and Sense, A Rosewood Spa® .

Steinbock joins Rosewood following 11 years with The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company. After joining the hotel group as Food & Beverage Director at The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel, Steinbock became General Manager of several properties within the collection and spearheaded the opening of 14 Ritz-Carltons both domestically and internationally. Steinbock also served as Vice President of Food & Beverage at the Ritz-Carlton Corporate office where he worked on developing concepts and opening restaurants with distinguished chefs Eric Ripert, Laurent Tourandel, Dean Fearing, Wolfgang Puck and others. Most recently, he served as General Manager of The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis.

Erich Steinbock knew at an early age that he wanted to pursue a career in the hospitality industry. Growing up in Vienna, Austria, his father, a politician who dreamed of owning a restaurant of his own introduced Steinbock to the art of making restaurants into part of his social fabric. These meals with his father sparked a life-long passion for food, one that would span across several decades and continents and eventually lead him to The Carlyle.

Steinbock began his career as waiter's apprentice in Vienna, followed by seasonal work in Switzerland. After spending two years as Bar Manager at the upscale Hotel du Cap on the island of Corisca, France, he left Europe behind to cultivate his hospitality career in Bermuda, holding positions as Food & Beverage Manager and Social Director for Elbow Beach Surf Club. Soon, Steinbock moved to the United States to join his wife, Judith, whom he had met in Boston while on vacation, and took the position of Maître d' at Topnotch Resort and Spa in Stowe, Vermont before moving on to become Resident Manager at The Huntley Lodge in Big Sky, Montana. He then joined Little America Hotels & Resorts where he held positions as Food & Beverage Manager at Sun Valley Resort in Sun Valley, Idaho and General Manager of The Westgate Hotel, a five-star, five-diamond property in San Diego California. Steinbock continued to follow his passion for food and opened an Italian restaurant in Boise, Idaho.

In 1991, Steinbock returned to Vienna to obtain his MBA at City University of Seattle. While in school, he worked as Director of Sales at Ottakringer, the largest brewery in Vienna, spearheading all Pepsi Cola sales in Austria and approved financial plans for more than 200 restaurants within the company. During this time, Steinbock and his wife also focused on raising their two children, a son and a daughter.

After both children graduated from high school and Steinbock received his MBA, his family moved back to the United States where he joined Steve Wynn at Mirage Resorts. While in Las Vegas, Steinbock worked as Vice President of Food & Beverage at Treasure Island and was instrumental in executing the pre-opening activities for the well-known Bellagio hotel. Soon, Steinbock moved on to the Beverly Hills Hotel in California where he was Director of Food & Beverage.

During his tenure with The Ritz-Carlton, Steinbock visited New York often to assist with the openings of The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park and The Ritz-Carlton New York, Battery Park. His wealth of experience, knowledge in the hospitality industry and appreciation for the culture and history of legendary hotels led him to manage one of Manhattan's most iconic hotels, The Carlyle.

"I am thrilled to join Rosewood and lead the team at The Carlyle," said Erich Steinbock. "I have an enormous respect for the tradition and significance of the hotel as the social center of Manhattan's Upper East Side. It is a place where history is written and the future is created and I look forward to opening an exciting new chapter in The Carlyle's history."

Steinbock has a love for 19th-century classical music and philosophy and Beethoven and Wagner are among his favorites.  An avid runner, he has competed in 13 marathons, several triathlons and just completed his first half Iron Man in May. Each year, Steinbock goes to Webster University in Vienna to teach an MBA class with an emphasis on strategies for service industries and a focus on hotels. He resides on the Upper East Side with his wife Judith, who is a registered critical care nurse.
